What area of New York to stay?

My husband and I are planning a trip to New York in June 2006 for our 1st wedding anniversary.

My hubby has been before and ended up in a dodgy bit of town and he doesnt want that to happen to us as I have never been before.

We are looking for a really safe and friendly area in a first class hotel. Can you help at all?

Congrats! If you want to stay in a great part of Manhattan, I would suggest near Times Square. The Marriott Marquis hotel is really nice and it%26#39;s in the heart of Manhattan. It%26#39;s a little on the expensive side but it is very impressive. You will be near the Empire State Building, Broadway, shopping and you can hop on a subway to go to Greenwich Village or where the World Trade Center once stood.

The Times Square area is safe but very crowded. If I were staying in the City, that%26#39;s where I would stay.
