would love to hear from locals and visitors as to what would be your favorite Broadway musical to see
More interested in ';the opinion of the people'; than the Times or any other official reviews
I am not what you would consider super-duper adventurous
thanks
Your Favorite Broadway Show
';The Producers'; is my favorite broadway show I have seen in the recent years.
I live in nyc, but only end up seeing the broadway shows a couple times a year. So I am not an expert, but enjoyed the current production of ';The Producers'; a lot.
Your Favorite Broadway Show
Have gone to a lot of theater in Boston and most recently saw two shows on Broadway -- Rent and Hairspray. Both very different genres, but the common thread was the outstanding talent on the stage. Truely memorable. So to answer your question, I enjoyed both. I think it is personal preferences that will sway you. (If you are going to NYC, there has been some recent cast changes to Hairspray).
In Beantown, have seen
Lion King -- which had the most amazing costuming/puppetry-- something quite innovative.
Mama Mia -- great if you are an ABBA fan
Phantom of the Opera -- music still sticks in my head
The Producers -- you have to appreciate the humor, a fun show, although the couple we went with were offended by it
For me, it%26#39;s Avenue Q, very inventive, eccentric, irreverent and darn funny.
Fiddler on the Roof for the score, just fantastic.
Hairspray %26amp; Wicked are highly recommended.
Seeing Spamalot next week, will see if it lives up the hype.
I think Rent has seen better days, did not like PHantom (sorry), just goes to show, to each his/her own.
Don%26#39;t forget that there are always wonderful Off-Broadway offerings, no need just to do the Broadway thing.
Hairspray and Spamalot, with Mamma Mia (especially if Louise Pitre ever comes back to it) also in the running.
Have the cast album of Avenue Q and am dying to see it, but when you say you%26#39;re not adventurous, does that mean you%26#39;re easily offended or just don%26#39;t want something too taxing on the brain...%26#39;cause I don%26#39;t think Avenue Q is for the Focus on the Family crowd.
I would say Movin%26#39; Out is my all-time favorite, but I am a dance lover, so that makes a difference. My second choice would be Hairspray, followed by Mamma Mia, Chicago, and Lion King.
Of the current offerings, I loved
Hairspray
Mamma Mia
Movin%26#39; Out
Avenue Q (though it%26#39;s not a ';big splashy musical';)
The Producers (which I loved with the original cast, but not so much with replacements)
Spamalot (not as great as its hype, but still a fun night)
Fiddler on the Roof (great production)
Wicked is a lot of fun and an enormous production, but I didn%26#39;t like the music at all.
I saw Rent with the original cast, and while I thought parts were good, I didn%26#39;t really like the overall show.
I also liked Spelling Bee, but again, it%26#39;s not a typical BSM (big splashy musical) that most visitors expect from Broadway.
I agree with ';NYCgirl'; about the off broadway comment.
Any recommendation for current off broadway perfomance in nyc?
ChurchesandPubs, we loved Altar Boyz, off Broadway at Dodger Stages. Really funny!
Will add:
The Great American Trailer Park Musical-very campy
Stomp
Jewtopia
Drumstruck
I Love You, You%26#39;re Perfect Now Change
Menopause the Musical (for ladies only-lots of laughs if you are of ';that age';).
Forbidden Broadway SVU - for theatre buffs only, in my opinion.
Naked Boys Singing - really, boys singing in the buff! (If this sort of thing interests you).
Others either love or hate Blue Man Group, I have not seen it so I cannot comment personally.
There are always dramas that come %26amp; go, too bad some of the better ones closed, like Manuscript %26amp; Beast on the Moon (this was phenomenal). Sometimes you just take a chance and it turns out to be excellent.
I am a huge Phantom of the Opera fan, so I will always say that.
One show that I am really looking forward to seeing in December is The Odd Couple with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. I hear that it is going to be fantastic. It opens in October.
