Alcohol Laws in NY

What is the legal age to buy and consume alcohol? 21? Are 18 year olds allowed in clubs and bars if not drinking? What do we need to know about the alcohol laws in NY. (if we are not Lindsay Lohan...age 17). LOL

Alcohol Laws in NY

21+ very strict. There are 18+ clubs.

Alcohol Laws in NY

Here%26#39;s some additional info:

Bars open anywhere from 9 AM to 11 AM, and usually close around 4AM, and everything is open on Sundays.

You buy beer at corner stores/bodegas, grocery stores and supermarkets, but not liquor stores. You buy wine, hard liquor, etc at liquor stores. Some grocery stores and supermarkets are starting to sell wine, but it is not common. Yes, proprietors WILL ask for ID, so you better have a good fake (oops! Wonder if that will be edited...)

We have an ';open container'; law here- no unauthorized public drinking - meaning, you can%26#39;t walk down the sidewalk with an open can o%26#39; beer in hand. But some people still get away with drinking liquor out of Snapple bottles in paper bags.

(Around 1998, I once got stopped by a cop because I was drinking something out of a paper bag - because said drink was too wet to hold. It was about 4:30 pm on a Tuesday, and I was standing at a street corner staring into space trying to remember an address. I must have looked pretty spacey. It was orange juice. Cop was quite annoyed. Well, the Giuliani years of money-making - I mean, ';quality of life'; - tickets are mostly over, so not to worry.)

You also can%26#39;t smoke indoors in NYC (except in the streets, in designated hotel rooms and private residences.) But there%26#39;s plenty of outdoor space (back patios, sidewalk cafes, etc.) at venues - you can bring your drink with you.

However, if you go outside to smoke at the front sidewalk, you can not bring your drink outside with you.

Well, Citysearch came up with only five 18+ places:

Thank you for the information. It helps me know where I can go with my 18 year old daughter. In Indiana, under 21 not allowed in restruants serving alcohol unless there is a wall or railing around the bar itself. We get our beer at the liquor store, groceries don%26#39;t sell it here. No alcohol sold on Sunday unless you are at a dining establishment that serves it with a meal.

Those Indiana laws sound oppressive!

New York is great in that you can buy a 6-pack on any corner (usually with multiple choices of delis) at all hours of the night.

Plus we don%26#39;t have to drive home. That makes a huge difference.
