I am taking a business trip to Philly and since I will be so close to NY (I think) I would love to make a trip over. What is the best way to get there and what should we do while there for the day. Would love to get in as much as possible! I am from GA and is my first time this way.
New York from Philly
Amtrak is quickest but most expensive
Septa (www.septa.org) connect to NJ Transit (www.njtransit.com) in Trenton
Greyhound and Peter Pan buses owned by the same company
the ';Chinatown'; buses - google for the company names of these
New York from Philly
I%26#39;ve done the Septa-NJ Transit connection, and it works very easily, and is so much less expensive than Amtrak.
I agree - SEPTA to NJ Transit works very well.
We rode both lines this past week. Septa trains connect to the Philly subway system at several points, I think it was the R7 train that went from City Hall station out to Trenton where you transfer to NJTransit, its a short walk.
Cost to New York from Princeton was 10.75 one way, and about an hour of time. If you could go outside of peak times you could get a round trip ticket for $18 or so. Add a few dollars to those amounts to travel from Trenton, the njtransit site will show the exact fares. Buy the NJtransit tickets at the automated machines at the station or pay an extra dollar, I think, on the train.
The Septa train from Trenton to central Philadelphia was $28 for the four of us round trip, they gave us a family fare that saved us a good chunk. Both trains were clean and comfortable.
You arrive at Penn Station in New York City, 2 blocks from the Empire State Building, Times Sqaure is about a 12 block walk north. Connecting subways in Penn Station will take you anywhere you might want to go if you dont want to walk. You won%26#39;t have an assigned seat or train on either Septa or NJTRansit, so you can return whenever you want, the trains run about every half hour or so until midnight.
When in Philly, steer well clear of the Philly steaks.
How long is the train ride to NY?
Why stay clear of the philly steaks? I sure don%26#39;t want heartburn if thats why!
Insightful---Are you talking about the Philly steak and cheese sandwiches? Why don%26#39;t you like them? I suppose it depends on where you had one. We%26#39;ve had some delicious ones at Jim%26#39;s and Tony Luke%26#39;s Jr. I have to thank the posters in the Philadelphia forum to directing us to Tony Luke%26#39;s!
I agree with SueFee re the Philly cheese steak. I used to live in Phila, and liked it a lot!
mmm cheesesteaks... funny how no place in NY can replicate this... they say 99 miles to Philly is the best, but it doesn%26#39;t match Pat%26#39;s. www.patskingofsteaks.com
