May Rose diner - near Flatiron - is it any good for...
I%26#39;ve been a couple of times. It%26#39;s always crowded on weekends, and the room is lively and has a nice high ceiling. However, I wasn%26#39;t wowed by the food.
For breakfast near your hotel, I would check out Ess-A-Bagel on Third Avenue between 50th and 51st Street. This is a NY breakfast in the bagel/lox/coffee style.
For the other kind of breakfast I think you%26#39;re interested in--the pancakes, bacon, french toast, etc., kind--I would check out Good Enough to Eat or Sarabeth%26#39;s on the Upper West Side, Kitchenette or Bubby%26#39;s in TriBeCa, or my new favorite, the 9th Street Market (a small, sit-down restaurant) in the East Village. Further downtown, Clinton Street Bakery (again, a sit-down restaurant as well) is also very popular.
For dinner/lunch in your area, I like Sip Sak, a Turkish place on 2nd Avenue, and Sakagura, a Japanese ';tapas'; and sake restaurant.
YOu might also want to visit menupages.com, which will allow you to see a list of restaurants in your neighborhood (east 40s).

Mayrose is a cute little place. It%26#39;s been featured on S*x and the City a couple of times. It%26#39;s a little bit trendy..but not pretentious, and the food is pretty good. It%26#39;s a on corner with a lot of windows, so it%26#39;s a great people watching spot.
Soon2 - here%26#39;s a response I posted in August...
If you want a great ';American'; and better yet New York breakfast/diner experience - head down to 21st Street and Broadway (near the 23rd street staiton at Park Ave Sotuh on the #6 subway line) - there you will find the unbeliveably good Mayrose. It%26#39;s comfort food with formica countertops. Breakfast is served until around Noon and is very inexpensive. This area is called Gramercy.
Here%26#39;s the whole thread on ';Good American breakfasts';
