As you say it is the financial district and therefore you can walk to everything in that area, including the ferries to the SOL and Ellis Island. You can also walk to Tribeca and Soho. Most other things in Manhattan are within a maximum of a 30 minute subway ride. Since it%26#39;s in the financial district it%26#39;s going to be quiet at night, i.e. not much is open at night there.

BTW, the hotel gets very good reviews on this site.

The Embassy Suites are good if you have a family - the breakfasts are hearty and there is quite a selection. Although we didn%26#39;t go to the movies, there is a movie theatre located at the back of the hotel. We had a great harbor view and the room was spacious enough for our family of 4. You are not that close to the subways; we were there in the summer so the walk was nice. However, I don%26#39;t know how much I%26#39;d enjoy the walk in the winter! I would definitely stay there again.

thanks! how much is the price range for cabs to times square?

It is a very good location, esp for downtown sites. I work in the area, and I love it. My only warning would be that, due to buildings and river location, in the winter, the last block to the hotel is very, very windy. I mean really windy. Like constantly 5 degrees colder than rest of Manhattan.

It is really convenient to many subways (except that the closest subway, Rector Street - R,W lines - will be closed for renovation until next year.).

You%26#39;re also close to shopping, tourism sites, City Hall, Wall Street, South Street Seaport, ferries to Ellis Island and SOL, pubs, dining, etc. I believe your%26#39;e right behind a DSW (discount shoes!!!!)

These 2 are excellent websites about the area. I believe that downtownny will send you free shopping and dining guides. You can order publications from their website.

Here is a post about eating in the area:

In the World Financial Center, check out Southwest NY - a great restaurant with a great view of the marina. Moran%26#39;s and Johnney%26#39;s Fish are good, too. (Don%26#39;t bother with Blockheads Mexican - overpriced.)

discount shoes..........yippeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

we are booked there for december and I was feeling depressed tha I would be near the end of a 3 mth complete food replacement diet ie no eating and upset I would be missing out on that fab brekkie and cheesecake and everything else good nyc has to offer....but shoes...I will just shoe shop whilst everyone else eats!!

Ah, the power of the discount shoe store!

This is the website for DSW:

You are near this one:

102 NORTH END AVE - NEW YORK, NY 10282 US

If you click on store locations and find this store, a map will pop up.

Bell Bates has a very nice salad bar and prepared food, in addition to herbs, vitamins, etc.

There is also a Wilner Chemists at 253 Broadway at Murray St.(right across from City Hall Park)

P.S. Correction re subway near hotel: The closest subway is the Park Place/Chamber Street/World Trade Center station with the A,C,E,2 and 3 trains, and it is open 24/7/365. It is about 4-5 blocks away.

Wonderful hotel i stayed here last year We wanted to stay in lower Manhattan for a change

and were not disspointed). We had a room overlooking the Hudson the views of an evening our amazing. We used cabs alot ( i think the cost to Times Square) was $12.. As i do not like the subway..(cannot bear being underground)so always walk or get a cab.

The free breakfast %26amp; drinks reception make this hotel excellent value for money.

we stayed there for one night earilier this year. there were a few problems. we booked a room overlooking the river and didn%26#39;t get it, requested a fridge and it wasn%26#39;t in our room, and requested a crib and were told they were out. after much complaining got the crib. i even called the week before and confirmed all of this. i was still satisfied with the hotel despite all of this. then at check out i let them know all of the problems i had and guess what. they gave us the room for free. i was very happy with the hotel after that.

Me %26amp; my pal also just booked up for 6 nights from Dec 29 - Jan 4.

Cant wait - 1st time New Yorkers.

Now where%26#39;s the chicks at :-)
