Tour in Niagara Falls / Toronto

Hi. I%26#39;m planning to go to Niagara Falls in the next weekend.

I%26#39;ll arrive at BUF airport at Friday 6 PM and I%26#39;ll leave BUF at Monday 6 PM.

My initial plan is to spent all saturday in the Niagara Falls (I think that on Friday night I won%26#39;t be able to do a lot of things) spot and then Sunday and Monday go to Toronto CA.

Do you think 1 day is enough to see all the main interesting places in Niagara Falls? What do you recommend me? I%26#39;m wondering if 3 days is much time to spent only at Niagara falls...

Any plan suggestions?

Tour in Niagara Falls / Toronto

no three days is a good amount of time in niagara, but two days in toronto is too much.

If you%26#39;re into casinos or wineries, then you could spend the weekend in Niagara, with emphasis on the Cdn side - including Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Have a look at the Canada forums for ideas, including Ontario %26gt; Niagara Falls and the Ontario %26gt; Toronto forums.

Ozkar,

If you land at 6pm you still have time to catch the Bisons Baseball game in the Buffalo downtown stadium-Friday night is a party with beer and Fireworks. If you want to go right to the Falls you can settle in and then take a moonlight walk to see the lights and on Friday there is sure to be fireworks. In fact I think that the Cave of the Winds remains open until 10.00 pm.

It is lovely at night. There is much to do in the area all day Saturday, don%26#39;t miss the Maid of the Mist. You may want to travel down to Niagara on the Lake and spend some time. Or on the American side-Lewiston and Youngstown.

It is a great idea to travel to Toronto-Sunday is a good day to drive there-get and early start, there is still traffic to deal with.

Have fun and let us know what you loved.

Hi there,

I work for Overthe fallstours.com and we provide airport transportation, as well as guided tours. You can fly into Buffalo where we can pick u up, bring you to a hotel, take you on a guided tour of Niagara Falls. We also provided airport transportation to Toronto, so if I were you I would fly out of Toronto after spending a day there.

Contact our website and see what you think.

Parking cost Cave of Winds and Maid of Mist?

We will be seeing just these 2 attractions and I noticed they are not near each other. Will we end up paying parking twice if we drive to each? Or is their a shuttle or trolley that takes you to each? and if so what is the cost?

On the Cdn board, there%26#39;s a useful post. Bibsie says that parking was $10

tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g154998-i97-k22273…

I%26#39;ve only viewed the US Maid of the Mist and Cave from the Cdn side, they look quite close to me. You%26#39;d only park once.

Parking cost Cave of Winds and Maid of Mist?

it depends where you park, you can park at the rainbow centre ramp for 10 USD or right at the visitors center for an even more outrageous price. overall, it really doesnt matter where you park, most prices are the same and everythign is in walking distance.

the maid of the mist loads at the observation tower and the cave of the winds is at the cliff end of goat island. its probably is a mile walk at most but doesnt seem far because your walking through the scenic state park. you can probably find a map somewhere online to show you where these places are, it really is hard to describe is writing.

Thank you Danny for that great information. On the map it was hard to tell if they were in walking distance of each other. Ill look for the $10.00 parking lot you mentioned and walk from there.

im not sure the name of the street the rainbow centre parking garage is on but you wont miss it...its right in the middle of city traffic. its located right next to the wintergarden and right accross the street from flight of angels hot air balloon (just follow the lines down to the ground). it really is a convenient and clean place, the price is the only problem but i suppose if you only visit once a year its ok to spend that on parking for 2 hours.

There is also parking right on Goat Island. I don%26#39;t remember how much-I think $7.00. From there is was a short walk to the cave of the winds. If you buy the passport to the Falls-it includes Maid of the Mist, cave of the winds, -a few other attractions and the use of the trolley all day. It is well worth the price.

Thank you buffalo girl for the great information I appreciate it.

If you are near the 3 sisters island you can actually pay for free and it is a nice walk to the falls!!! we did that the night we wanted to see the lights, if we knew about it we would have used it the morning too for the tours. Make sure you get there early!! :)

You can also buy a package from the parks dept. either when you get there or on line. You get Maid of the mist, Behind the falls, The whiet water rapids walk and a day pass for the people mover bus. Oh yes and admission to the Butterfly conservatory, and the incline. My bet would for you to park at the Imax Movie, its like 15 for the day. Walk to theincline take it to the journey behind the falls and either walk...it is not a mile or take the people mover. we had 3 kids with us 11,9,5 and they loved the butterflies..they put up a fight about going but loved it in the end.

Hi there

I am a tour guide for over the falls tours. Our american tour includes both of those attractions and we pay for parking and attraction fees with the price of your tour and you also get picked up right at your hotel.

If you go by car on your own remember that once you pay to park once at any state park in New York, keep your receipt for the day and you can park in the other lots for free.

Hope this helps

Visiting Niagra early January from Sydney - Need help...

Hi guys. Firstly what a great site. I am stunned by your obvious pride of your country that makes you help us tourists as you do.

My wife and I will arrive in Buffalo on January 4. Some questions for you.

- I have read that Maid of the Mist does not operate. True?

- Can you get tours at that time or is a car required?

(We are only there for the 2 days and don%26#39;t want to risk missing seeing the falls preferably before and after sunset)

- What sort of temperatures might I expect?

Thanks Mate!

I had to say that because people expect us Australians to speak like that. :-)

Visiting Niagra early January from Sydney - Need help...

Funny Michael-do you really do ';shrimp on the barbie'; too?

I have been obsessed with it ever since I saw it on the Travel Channel.

Well bring your Parkas and leather gloves (they block the wind) because January is high winter around here. It starts getting dark around 4:00 pm-we do have some brilliant days-but it would be very hard to predict as our weather is so dependent on the Lakes. The maid of the mist does not run in January, however the cave of the winds, and a few of the other spots are open.

The Falls in the winter has unsurpassed beauty-on icy days the formations at the brink are impressive, and on snowy days the rapids gleam blue against the snow. It really is breathtaking. Normally, I would suggest that you rent a car-there is so much to see and do-it would be nice to chart your own course. But, because our weather could be god-awful in January you may be better off booking a tour and let someone else do the driving. The temperatures will almost certainly be cold-probably well below 0 degrees (C)-dress in layers-light shirt, heavy sweater, winter coat, hats, gloves, scarfs. That way you can remove things if the sun gets hot. Good luck!!!

Visiting Niagra early January from Sydney - Need help...

yea it will be cold and theres definately not as many tourists as there are in the summer. its not like everything shuts down though. of course there will be fewer things to do while here but youll see theres tons to do. im sure youve heard about that lake effect snow thing that us buffalonians get used to. buffalogirl%26#39;s right, unless youre used to driving in the snow you might want to book a tour, but the most common sense option probably would be to rent a car because the traffic in the area as a whole isnt bad at all. plus you can use the car to travel accross the border instead of walking the bridge and you can travel to local malls or whatever you please. but overall remember, dress appropriately. the forecast might call for a high of 20F, but add in winds and then the fact that youll be by the falls, it will feel more like 0F.

I am going in June of this year. Flying into Buffalo for 2 days and Staying at the Sheraton on the Falls. Do I need to rent a car? Is there anything I need to drive to in Niagra, or can I just walk or take the shuttle to the major attractions?

i always recommend to rent a car, but thats to people who plan on doing other things while here. if you plan on staying strictly in niagara falls and not venturing to niagara on the lake, buffalo, etc then by all means save yourself the money. but if you do plan on doing extra things save yourself some time by renting cause the public metro system here isnt like it is in nyc.

Hey guys, thanks heaps. More Aussie slang.

Re: Shrimp on the BBQ. We throw everything on there. Including prawns as we know them. (Shrimp to you)

Our comercials with Paul Hogan that used the term shrimp was specifically written for you guys in the states.

Hey Buffalogirl, what was it that fascinated you about Australia?

Your advice is great. Another quick question how long would it take to get to Toronto? Is it worth it? Is there easy transport there?

Michael the maid of the mist definitely does not operate in january and when you get there you will understand why.We went 10 years ago in april. We really wanted to go on the maid of the mist and our travel agent couldnt tell us why.

When we arrived it was totally iced over below the falls and huge chunks of ice were going over.Spectacular.Also great because very few tourists. But it will be cold easpecially if you get a winter storm.

Michael,

Travel channel did a panoramic view of Sydney Harbor-that was most beautiful-they also spent time on the fact that the toilets flush in the oppisite direction from us-

Is that true?

Anyway, one day I will go to Sydney-you will have to let me know how you survived that looonggg flight.

Toronto is actually around 90k from Niagara Falls-but you must deal with terrible traffic-so the travel time is a good 2 hours.

When I just didn%26#39;t want to deal with it- I have taken the train to Toronto-the depot is right over the whirlpool bridge-which also has beautiful scenery. In fact the train I think it is VIA-has all inclusive trips that include train, transfers, and hotel-take a look at the web site. It is easy to get around in Toronto

their public transport is much better than what we have around here.

Toronto is a wonderful experience, and depending on how busy you like to be-it is a great place to visit.

I am so glad to see that you are willing to brave our winter for a visit, you won%26#39;t be disappointed.

Coming to SYDNEY in June 2006, but returning to Falls with a group - to help fund my Australia adventure - in October. I love this site, too. It is fair dingum! I%26#39;%26#39;m practicing up for you blokes.

Tours don%26#39;t run in January, best to rent a car. Try to stay at a hotel walking distance to the Falls. I heard Howard Johnson on 454 Main Street on NY side has best location.

Have fun !

Hey RainbowTravel - good try but the expression is ';Fair Dinkum'; and it means true or real. Have a great time in Australia - I had a great time in Niagara Falls in July.

Tipping...How much

Could anyone clarify how much I should tip hotel staff during my 5 day stay in New York in October. If it makes any difference I will be staying at a 5 star hotel close to Central Park... I have heard of various amounts that I should give them, but I do not want to offend anyone by not giving enough!

Tipping...How much

A five-star hotel will warrant tips in the high range of the following, but IMO, the range is pretty accurate.

In general:

-chambermaids should get $2-$3 per day

-bellmen should get $2-$5 per bag

-parking attendants should receive $2-$5 per car

-door attendants should get $1-$2 when they hail you a cab.

The Concierge Desk:

While concierge service is provided by the hotel at no cost to guests, in some cases, such as when the concierge has to work a little harder for special requests, a gratuity is appropriate, approximately $5.

transport from new york city to westbury

i am heading to new york at the start of december and and need to know best way to get to westbury by public transport on a saturday.anybody tell me best way...going to see brian setzer orchestra by the way...rock n roll.

transport from new york city to westbury

You will need to take the Long Island Rail Road to Westbury. Here%26#39;s the link... http://www.lirr.org/lirr/

You can connect to the LIRR at Penn Station in NYC.

Take the LIRR to Westbury Station and take a taxi for a 2 mile ride to North Fork Theatre. The number to call for a cab is (516) 333-1111.

Super Shuttle

I just have a question for anyone who has used them (from JFK). I have heard that some people have had to wait a few hours while they fill up the van (with people). So do you think it would save time or take longer to pre-book the trip?

(**4 months to go %26amp; counting!!!**)

Super Shuttle

Whether you prebook or not will not make a difference. They wait for the van to fill up, then each person is dropped at their respective hotel, so if you are at the end of the line, it will take that much longer.

I have used them in the past and will never use them again, that is just my experience. Too much wasted time, not worth it to me, my vacation time is too valuable to worry about this.

Super Shuttle

While I didn%26#39;t pre-book and only had to wait about 20 minutes or so for a van (I guess I lucked out and requested one just as the van was almost filled; I was the last passenger picked-up) the trip took more than twice as long as a cab ride straight from the airport. We were jammed in and it was annoying to have to disembark to let people out and then get back in at several stops.

Take a cab, the extra $$$$ are worth it.

I%26#39;ve only used them once, we only had a few minutes wait, but it can take an age to get to your drop off. I%26#39;d rather use them from the airport than to as the delays could cause you to miss flights. That said, I now get a taxi from the airport as holiday time is very precious.

Keen to go to a cheap gym/spa for a jacuzzi/spa/steam room/pool etc when we are there - need to relax with all the walking we%26#39;re gonna be doing (and drinking!)

Any advice appreciated - we%26#39;re in he Embassy Suites @ Financial District

You%26#39;re feet will feel brand new!

    Chill Out in NYC

Also, check if the Embassy Suites has a gym, etc. (I%26#39;m guessing they do) or if you are allowed to use the New York Sports Club (nearby in World Financial Center, behind your hotel) for a discount (?)

trip report - Breaking the rules....

Myself, my wife and her parents drove from Ohio and stayed in Princeton this week. We saw a little of Philadelphia and Atlantic City and alot of New York City in 3 days. We broke most of the ';rules'; - we stayed in New Jersey, went to 3 cities in 3 days, and commuted into all the cities.

SATURDAY:Drove to Princeton NJ from Columbus OH. Gas prices steadily increase as we went east from 2.99 to 3.30-3.40. And aren%26#39;t we done paying for the Penn. Turnpike yet???

SUNDAY:Breakfast at free buffet at motel. Drove to Trenton and took Septa train into central Philadelphia. Met brother in law and took subway to South Philly, walked to his apartment near the Italian market. Went to Ralph%26#39;s for some great Italian dining. Reversed itinery back, got groceries, and ate light dinner in room.

MONDAY: Rode NJTransit from Princeton Junction to Penn Station. At 7AM, train was very crowded, we stood most of the way. Breakfast at Route 66 Diner on 7th around 9AM - very good food at decent prices and nearly empty. Walked to Times Square and meandered down Broadway, gawking like typical tourists at people, buildings and traffic. Got to Empire State Bldg. around 11AM, wait was only about 10 min going up, we had preprinted tickets in hand but the wait to buy tickets looked short also. Views were spectacular as the day was clear. Bought the cheesy picture they take of you as a souvenier. Wait to get back down was a bit longer than going up.

Went to a restaurant just outside ESB for light salad lunch around 1PM. Walked up Fifth Ave, wandered thru Rockefeller Center and went into St. Patricks cathedral for a respite from the noise and heat.

Walked into Central Park and wandered thru the south end. Around 4PM, decided to go to Johns Pizza on 65th and found that it either had closed or the guidebook was in error. With no backup plan, wandered around a few blocks looking for something else and found nothing appealing. Walked back towards Times Square and sorry to say, ducked into TGIFridays for a bite. Very expensive prices compared to Fridays anwhere else, do not go here. Walked back to Penn Station, took the 7:03 train back to Princeton, very tired but at least we had seats this time.

TUESDAY: Breakfast at free buffet at motel. Drove to Atlantic City, arrived around 10AM. Walked the boardwalk and left some money at Trump%26#39;s casino. At 1PM, a quick bite at McD%26#39;s and off to Staten Island. Caught the 4:00 ferry for magnificent views of the city and Statue of Liberty on a hot clear day. Walked to Ground Zero, very moving to really see it after so many shots on TV. Walked thru Chinatown and Little Italy, to Lombardi%26#39;s for pizza. We all agreed it was the best pizza we had ever had, and had to order another pie to share. Walked back and took the 9PM ferry back to Staten Island, the views are just as magnificent at night. Traffic leaving the island at that time was no problem and we got back to Princeton around 10:30.

WEDNESDAY:Drove home. Gas had decreased to 3.14 in New Jersey and on the turnpike, and to 2.70 at home.

    My thoughts:

I had visited the city in 1982 and alot has changed, mostly for the better. The whole city is much cleaner, I saw alot less homeless this time. I felt very safe everywhere we went.

I had forgotton that finding a bathroom can be a real problem in the city. Being middle aged does not help either. A note:If you are at the top of the ESB use the facities there, when you get to the lobby there are none and they will not let you go up to the 2nd floor just to use the restroom.

The card readers at the subway turnstiles are exceptionally touchy to use, they are frustrating and need to be replaced. It wasn%26#39;t just us, I saw a number of people have problems with them. My wife and I rode the subways in Atlanta and Washington in the 90%26#39;s, we had no problems swiping the cards on those.

The sales pitch for the voice tour on the ESB was very annoying and also bogus, they tell you there is nothing to point out landmarks at the top. But there are large etched aluminum plates on all 4 sides of the observation deck which do just that. Can you really see Seinfeld%26#39;s diner from there as they claim???

Unlesss the weather is bad you should just walk unless its a really long way, don%26#39;t use the subway for short hops of a station or two. Even though it was hot and we are out of shape we walked almost everywhere.

Its too bad there are not some nice motels on Staten Island in walking distance to the ferry, it would be a perfect location.

Commuting into the city to visit is not very convienent and its definately not for everyone, but it can be done and it was the best option for us on this trip. The suite in Princeton had 2 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, a living room and a complete kitchen with utinsels, plates, cups, etc, for 160/night. It also saved a big chunk of money, alot more that the total of train, gas and toll costs of commuting, since 2 rooms at a decent hotel with parking in New York would be at least 400/night. But I wouldn%26#39;t want to do it for any longer of a stay than we did, and if you like nightlife it really would not work at all.

trip report - Breaking the rules....

There are more and more posters now enquiring about staying outside of NYC and your post will be a great help to them..you did it, but have also noted the negative sides as well. Glad you enjoyed your trip.

trip report - Breaking the rules....

Well, there really are no ';rules'; to break, everyone needs to do what works for them, and if this worked for you, as it seems to have, then more power to ya. Glad it all worked out and that you enjoyed your stay.

Yes, the bathroom issue. One just has to know where to go, not pun intended. and go whenever you can, even if you think you don%26#39;t need to.

Actually, I think there was a post about this somewhere on this forum.

I think for people who want to stay in NJ, Princeton isn%26#39;t the best location. It really is too far away to ';commute'; for more than 1 or 2 days at most. On weekends, the train ride is 90 minutes one-way. There are other options much closer.

Of course, if they want to visit both Philadelphia and NYC, then Princeton is a nice middle ground.

    www.broadwayfocus.com/nj_nyc/

That John%26#39;s Pizzeria near Lincoln Center closed a while ago. Too bad you didn%26#39;t just stroll up Columbus, there are plenty of nice places within a few blocks. Make a note for the next trip.

Looks like you had a nice but quick trip.

About where to ';go'; . . . I thought that is why there is a Starbucks on every corner . . .

I%26#39;m 61 and have to %26#39;go%26#39; a lot. I usually head for the nearest fast-food joint, McD%26#39;s or Burger King - they usually have publically accessible restrooms.

And yes, Starbucks on almost every corner.

    You asked: ';Can you really see Seinfeld%26#39;s diner from there as they claim???';

I haven%26#39;t been to ESB in years, but the Seinfeld diner is near where I live. It%26#39;s on Broadway and 112th Street, in a one-story building, so it%26#39;s unlikely that you could see it. You might be able to see the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, which is a block away and is HUGE.

Just found this on Ask A New Yorker:

“Have you ever had to relieve yourself in New York City and searched in vain for a public restroom until your back teeth were floating?....A 40 Point Guide to Peeing in New York by Ray Tempus tells you in hilarious words and uncensored pictures how you-man or woman, old or young, can take care of bodily business, get away with it, and actually have some fun doing it…..Ray Tempus is a painter/sculptor and former stockbroker who knows the streetwise ways of the city…A 40 Point Guide to Peeing in New York reveals sophisticated New Yorkers’ secrets to using automobiles and mailboxes as shields, taking advantage of construction scaffolds and raincoats, and employing conversations with imaginary friends as cover. The instructions are clear as a bell. Each of the book’s forty points is illustrated with one of Tempus’s nonpareil drawings…As essential as a street map, as convenient as a Metrocard.”

Apparently, the book can be purchased by calling 1-888-641-2435 or by mail from One Temptation Press, 545 8th Ave #401, New York, NY 10018-4307, and the cost is $10.

And when public urination loses its thrill, how about checking out actual indoor plumbing - here, at the Bathroom Diaries:

Thanks, QB - I think I much prefer your suggestion!

    new york apt

looking for apartment for a week in summer 2006

    any suggestions

    new york apt

I%26#39;m staying at West Eleventh (www.west-eleventh.com) from Sept 26th through to the 3rd October. I will post a report on how I got on when I got back but the apartments look lovely and they%26#39;re in Greenwich which is a pretty area and away from the hustle and bustle of mid-town. The reviews on here are mixed, a lot of bad reviews from people who haven%26#39;t stayed there and just had contact with the owner who was rude. I%26#39;ve found them to be abrupt in their replies but as long as their apartments are nice I%26#39;m not that bothered!

    new york apt

im staying at radio city apartments, they have good reviews on here and seem very reasonable!

    www.radiocityapartments.com

There are now about 20 hotels with apartment style rooms. There are a number of websites for vacation rentals. I can give you all of them but you%26#39;ll be overwhelmed. Do you have an idea of what area you want? Budget? Type of apartment? (size)

    newyork.craigslist.com

yes the apartment would be for family of six.

    2 children under 5.

would it be better to get apt or hotel for 1week.

Hi, I%26#39;ve never used these but did a lot of searching for an apartment recently and the best I could find was www.furnishedquarters.com.

The site has photographs of the apartments and also floor plans, although when I contacted the company they pointed out that these were representative only as each apartment was slightly different.

I ended up booking a guest house as it worked out cheaper but then there are only two of us to accomodate.

Having said that the apartments do look really nice with good quality furnishings, some have gyms and pools in the buildings if that%26#39;s the kind of thing you%26#39;re keen on, and many of them have doormen. They seem to have a wide choice of locations too.

If anyone else has used this company or has some local knowledge I would be interested in hearing their experiences as I am thinking about booking one of these later on next year.

wham I think it depends on your budget and how much space you need. It will be simpler to get a hotel apartment and know what to expect b/c you can read reviews here. But if you want 2 bedrooms or more, that starts to get expensive in the hotels. There are one bedroom suites that can sleep 6 with 2 big beds in the bedroom and a sofabed for 2 in the sitting room. But that also means only one bathroom.

If budget isn%26#39;t too much of an issue, I%26#39;d look at the Salisbury Hotel which I know has 2 bedroom , 2 bathroom suites. It%26#39;s centrally located, not outrageously priced and very near Central Park which will be good with kids in the summer.

The Radio City Apartments I agree is another good place. They do have some 2 bedroom suites but I don%26#39;t know whether they%26#39;re also 2 baths.

The upper westside is another very family friendly area. There are several suite hotels up there including the Beacon, the Milburne and the Belleclaire. I%26#39;m not sure if any have 2 bedroom suites though. The Lucerne is probably the nicest hotel in that area. They do have some suites but I%26#39;m not sure how large they are.

Another idea is checking whether either of the 2 timeshare hotels in NYC have rental availabilities. They are the Manhattan Club and the Hilton something. Tug2.net is one website where timeshare owners list rentals. I know there are some large one bedrooms in the Manhattan Club that have 2 full baths. I think there are also some other websites to look for these rentals if you do a websearch. This can sometimes be cheaper than many other options.

An apartment will usually be cheaper but you always run the risk of getting something that%26#39;s not what you expected or wanted AND you won%26#39;t have daily maid service. That said, people have been very happy with places from several websites.

    citylightsnewyork.com

    newyorkhabitat.com

    http://www.metro-home.com/

gezash, I%26#39;ve been posting about furnishedquarters.com which I found out about elsewhere but don%26#39;t actually know anyone who%26#39;s used them and noone here has posted about using them. I agree, their website looks great and the apartments do seem nice. There%26#39;s a website slowtrav.com that has reviews of apartments around the world. I wonder whether there are any reviews there.

Craigslist is definitely another option. People who may be going away during the summer and want to rent their apts. will post there. You can also post your own ad there for free and describe what you want and have people respond to you. I think in order to do that though, you have to be reasonably knowledgeable about the city and the various areas.

vrbo.com (vacation rental by owner) is another option but be careful about locations. Many that sound as though they%26#39;re in Manhattan are not. ;)

One company NOT to deal with trades under the names urbanstay.com, yourstay.com, and woogoo.com. They%26#39;re unscrupulous and people have had lots of problems with them.

nywhiz, I%26#39;ve just checked out slowtrav.com but can%26#39;t find anything on furnishedquarters.com unfortunately, (other than a link), but thanks for mentioning it as I%26#39;ve been reading some great trip reports on there.

Let%26#39;s hope someone will be able to give us some feedback in the future.

gezash I originally heard of furnished quarters on another travel website from someone who used them to house a large number of Australian families who were transferred to Manhattan on business. They used furnished quarters until they could find more permanent housing. The poster said all seem to be satisfied.

I would say the biggest challenge for finding an apt. in NY is lack of consistency. An agent can be great but is not in control of everything in an apt. so there will be some good ones and some problems. Also, some of these agent/managers would prefer renting for a longer time period so may not be willing to commit to a 1 week rental far in advance when they might get a request for a 1 month rental for the same property.

For people who are willing for others to stay in your home/apt., there are home exchanges, particularly active in the summer (for wham).

    Looking for an affordable hotel

I am looking for a good hotel convenient to Manhattan for about $100/night. We will not have a car, so we need something convenient to public transportation. I am looking at the Ramada Limited Jersey City, which is near the PATH train, but I am wondering if there is something that is also a little more convenient to Laguardia airport, which is where we will arrive.

If you don%26#39;t need a private bath, there may be options IN Manhattan. The YMCA Westside and possibly the Vanderbilt both have private rooms for 2 for under $100 I think. Those may even have private bathroom.

La Guardia is IN Queens so any place there would be closer than New Jersey.

If there are just 2 of you, you might try bidding on Priceline. If it%26#39;s a short trip, I%26#39;ve seen people ';win'; the Hilton NY or Times Square for $110-120/night at times.

Forgot to mention, if you don%26#39;t mind staying in someone%26#39;s apartment with them (usually with your own bath) people have reported good experiences with the ';hosted'; accomodation through

Roberto, there%26#39;s plenty to do in Canada. The major cities within a weekend%26#39;s reach of NYC are Toronto (in Ontario) and Montreal (in Quebec). I would suggest that Ottawa is not worth the additional distance if you only have a couple of days, nor, unfortunately, will you have an opportunity to get up into the Muskoka, Haliburton or Algonquian regions unless you go straight there to spend a couple of days at a lakeside resort or camping. I know more about Toronto, so here%26#39;s some info to help you consider your options. Try the Montreal forum for more information if you%26#39;re more interested in Montreal than Toronto.

Washington DC and Toronto are very different, so it just depends on what you want to do. You definitely do not need a guided tour to Toronto from NYC though- you can do it on your own.

Go over to the Toronto forum to see how other travellers have planned two and three day trips from NYC. Check out the ';From Toronto to NYC'; for a discussion of the best way to make the trip (given time and $) and the ';3 Days in Toronto'; thread for lots of ideas on how to maximize your time and keep your costs down. (That poster is coming to TO on a $100 roundtrip bus ticket from NYC, someone else flew Buffalo to NYC return for $130 Cdn.)

Three days won%26#39;t give you enough time to get very far out of Toronto, but you could do a one-day guided tour to Niagara Falls and Niagara on the Lake. These tours leave right from downtown Toronto so it%26#39;s very easy. You%26#39;ll probably see more than you thought you could in 3 days, but if you%26#39;re taking the bus or train you%26#39;ll lose a lot of time travelling. If it fits your budget, flying to TO or Buffalo is the better option. The exchange rate will help you get even more for your dollar in Toronto which helps too.

If you are interested in the natural parks and/or lake region, post your question on the Ontario forum and you%26#39;ll get lots of help.

    Buena suerte!

Also Roberto, if you are interested in the club scene, both Toronto and Montreal have a busy one (it%26#39;s not NYC, but it%26#39;s busy) with lots of the ';name'; international DJs making the trip, often playing smaller venues than they do States-side. New York magazine did an article in the spring about the scene in Montreal in case you%26#39;re interested: newyorkmetro.com/nymetro/鈥ndex.html

I can say, if you all like BBQ, please dry and hit the dinosaur bbq, it is far by the best and a very unique abiance (sp). I see you post very often in the st augustine forum and wanted to ask if you knew of the Pirate Haus at all? And if you did what your opinion on it might be? I didnt want to ask in the st augustine forum as I know the owner goes in as well. Thanks for anything you may know and i hope you enjoy your time in Upstate Western NY.

The Newton Hotel is on the Upper West side on Broadway and 95th Street. It gets good reviews, especially for value. It is in a safe residential neighborhood with close by shops and good moderately priced restaurants. It is one block from the subway which can get you to midtown in 10 minutes and most anywhere in Manhattan in 30 minutes. A few stops on subway from Lincoln Center.

Just came back from staying in Embassy Suits, Niagara Falls. Very clean and nice hotel. Full breakfast is included as well as a managers reception every day 2pm - 7pm (chips, dip, vedj, 2 alcoholic drinks per room per day, all the soda, tea, coffee, juice you want. Parking was a bit steep, $20 canadian but that also had advantages, valet parking, bring the car to the front door and they take it, call up 15 mins before you need it and its there when you get outside. Staff were friendly and if you get a fallsview room, well it is truly breathtaking. We looked right out at the horseshoe falls from our bedroom and so close you actually hear the falls. If you dont want to walk to far they have a shuttle bus and it is next door to the new casino. I would definately go back. Top marks.

    Transportation in New York

    Hello,

We are planning a trip to NYC next week on our ';way home'; from Cleveland to KC and this is our first time in New York.

We found a hotel in our budget in Parsippany, New Jersey and we will have our own car with us, but we get the feeling that if we have a day or day and a half to see some of the sites we should take the public transportation instead of driving our own car. We are anxious about trying to navigate the city. We are planning on seeing CBGB, Central Park, Times Square, World Trade Center and Greenwich Village, etc.

Is it possible to drive and park near these areas or should we take the public transportation?

Also, we looked and the train ride from near our hotel in NJ to Greenwich Village would take 2 hours, is there a park and ride program in NYC so that we could drive there and take the subway/busses around the city?

Thank you very much for your help!

    Transportation in New York

All the places you mentioned are definitely more accessible by public transportation. You will have a hard time finding parking space in these areas unless you want to pay alot for garage parking. Since you will be in NJ, you should drive the car to the nearest PATH train station to NY and park it around there and take the PATH train into Manhattan where all the places you want to see are. Once in Manhattan, you can buy a one day unlimited ride pass Metrocard which will allow you to ride the subways and buses to get where you want. I%26#39;m sorry I%26#39;m not familiar with the location of the NJ train stations. However, if you need any more info on the subways, I%26#39;ll be glad to help.

    Have fun!

    Transportation in New York

This is the NJ PATH train website:

    http://www.panynj.gov/path/

    This is New Jersey Transit:

    http://www.njtransit.com/index.jsp

Here is the MTA site about the subways, buses and tourism:

    http://www.mta.info/metrocard/tourism/

Thank you both for your replies and for the links. Is there somewhere in NYC that we can drive our car and park and ride the subway/busses? This way we don%26#39;t have to worry about the New Jersey/NYC connection and we just have to navigate New York city. Also, I am not sure how late we will be out and I am a bit hesitant to be on the subway later at night, but that might just be from movies.

How much is typical garage parking in Manhattan? We went to Chicago last year and their parking ranged anywhere from $15 to $25. We can%26#39;t pay too much, but the main thing is I would hate to spend all the time and headache driving and then find no place to park.

    I appreciate any advise.

    Thanks a lot

Parking all day in Manhattan is going to cost you about $30 or more plus the bridge or tunnel tolls from NJ (an additional $6). You are better off taking public transportation from NJ and while in Manhattan.

Please listen to the NY residents---they%26#39;re right---parking and driving in NYC are both very difficult, not to mention expensive. Truly, you are better off parking the car by a PATH train station, if at all possible. Taking the trains at night shouldn%26#39;t be a problem---at train stations, don%26#39;t stand in any deserted areas of the platforms (or stand as close as possible to the info booth) and ride in cars that have other people in them (in other words, not in an empty car).

Since the New Jersey Transit and PATH trains run infrequently (or not at all) late at night, use their schedules to determine how late you stay out. (and don%26#39;t forget to give yourself time to get to that PATH station or Penn Station and buy the tickets)

Driving in Manhattan is not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. My advice would be to avoid driving during rush hour, especially in midtown. There is free on street parking or fairly reasonable metered parking in many neighborhoods (make sure you have a lot of quarters or buy a parking pass). There is a large parking lot at the Port Authority (near Times Square, which is a major subway stop as well).

I forget to mention one thing. If you do decide on taking the train, drive to Newark and take the PATH. It is cheaper and runs 24 hours.

    Excellent and Inexpensive Walking Tours

The Municipal Art Society of New York has a number of excellent walking tours in NYC neighborhoods. The tour guides are very knowledgeable about history and architecture in the areas of the tour. Some of the tours are free, most cost $12 a person. Most of the tours do not have to be booked in advance. Just show up at the time and location indicated. Below is the link for the tours through October. Check back for later dates. Many of the tours are repeated each month.

    Excellent and Inexpensive Walking Tours

Thanks, Ken - I%26#39;ve added this site to my Favorites. I notice that there%26#39;s a tour celebrating 100 years of the Staten Island Ferry. They talk about the new ferries which are being introduced. I had heard that, whilst they are a great improvement for commuters, tourists don%26#39;t get the wonderful, unobstructed views of Liberty and Ellis Islands that the old ferries provided. Is this the case do you know?

    Excellent and Inexpensive Walking Tours

I still have their original book of walking tours, they%26#39;re wonderful. And I%26#39;ve got the book they used to give you when you were on jury duty that has six or eight downtown walking tours.

Thanks for the link. I like your new picture, too.

I too have bookmarked that link. I did the tour of Grand Central in 2002 and it was brilliant. Our guide was so good, it was something I%26#39;d certainly recommend.

    Nic, I don%26#39;t know the answer to your question about the obstructed views on the new ferries but there was an interesting story in the paper about one of the new ferries the other day. The ferry was manufactured in the mid-west (I thing Wisconsin) and brought down to NYC from there by water. Along the way the crew kept being asked if ';they were lost.';

Bettina, thanks for your comment on the picture--I thought it was time for a change.

I like it, Ken! I notice that, in each incarnation of your avatar, you%26#39;re getting closer to the camera. Is there one you%26#39;re keeping in reserve where we can see what you actually look like?

Nic, I only purchased a digital camera relatively recently and have no ';digital'; close-ups. We will have to meet in NY or UK, so you can see the awful reality. Ken

Let%26#39;s face it, Ken, it can%26#39;t be any worse than mine!

    new york pass

just been checking out the new york pass - we wil be in new york for three days in january - is it worth the money - will i have time tovisit most of the attravtions and so get my moneys worth

    new york pass

Not unless you run around like a chicken w/o a head. ;) Look at the citypass.com If you%26#39;re interested in most of the things included there it%26#39;s a good deal and you can probably do most if not all in 3 days but it includes museums.

    new york pass

I use the pass for one or two week stays. Otherwise I think you might be spending more than you can reasonably do while enjoying the city. Unless you are traveling by hovercraft and don%26#39;t require food or sleep. (smile)

In a week, we still missed out on at least one attraction. We also found that we forced ourselves to visit somewhere because it was ';free'; which we probably wouldn%26#39;t have done otherwise. Having said that, we still saved money overall - you just need to be aware of the pitfalls.

We didn%26#39;t visit every attraction on the list, and actually went to one that we wouldn%26#39;t really have gone to, but still saved money. Just do a quick calculation of the places you%26#39;ll definitely go and it might still work out cost effective as that%26#39;s what happened with us, but we were there for a week. I%26#39;d hate to be rushing around just to get my moneys worth.

    New York for Christmas

I%26#39;m wanting to bring my kids (16 %26amp; 12) to the US next year. I%26#39;m deciding whether to go for a white Christmas or just a normal time of the year (maybe around September). I know the light and weather might not be so great but living in Australia, my sons have never really seen snow and I thought it does look amazing. How likely would it be to snow in New York at Christmas? Are we better going somewhere else and then having New Year in New York? I%26#39;d really appreciate anyone%26#39;s advice with pros and cons! Thanks.

    New York for Christmas

The chance of having snow on the ground in NYC on Christmas is about 15 to 20 percent. If you are here in NYC at this time and there is no snow, you can take a trip 50 to 100 miles north and you can be 80 to 90 percent sure of seeing snow. The City is quite magical at his time of year, even if there is no snow. There is a thread going on right now about a report on being in NYC at Christmas time.

    customs and visa

has anyone been stopped at customs without a visa for doing a crime in the uk or been sent back for not letting on

    customs and visa

I suspect plenty of people have. I would not take a punt on trying to hoodwink homeland security. If they catch you and you are white they will send you home. If you are brown they will send you to Cuba (and not for a holiday!!)

    customs and visa

I think what you need to remember here is that if you have been convicted of a crime and you fail to get the visa and you therefore have to do the visa waiver n the plane you sign a declaration and one would imagine lying on that is a fairly serious offence in the states.

I remember reading in one of the womens mags about a man who had been convicted with a small amount of drugs on him and didnt admit and lied on the waiver, somehow they knew or found out and ended up sitting in prison...

so in answer to your question...dont lie.

I dont know the ins and outs of this story fully. But a lady I know was treating her whole family to a holiday in Florida, six kids and spouses and grand kids. However, for some reason which I dont know one of her sons was refused entry and had to return home.

I know of two people that were stopped entering NYC because of previous convictions, it%26#39;s a risky game so just be upfront and honest

    Newark to Times Square

Can anyone give any help regarding getting from Newark airport to Times Square.

I think we have decided theat a taxi would be the best option.

Are they easy to find? Do we need to negotiate a price before we get in?

    Newark to Times Square

A taxi from Manhattan to Newark is a flat rate (around $50). Tip is not included. At the airport, there will be several taxi stands - just line up and hop in! A very easy alternative (if you want to save a few dollars) is to take the bus from Newark to Port Authority (right in Times Square). From the baggage claim department, there will be signs inside directing you to the far end of the terminal- the buses are parked outside in an adjacent lot. You can buy a ticket on board, I believe it%26#39;s $10-12. They run every 10-30 minutes, and you don%26#39;t need to make a reservation.

    Newark to Times Square

Just thought I%26#39;d add that we took the bus mentioned above in April and it was excellent - much better than the shuttle bus we took the first time! The round-trip price was 20 USD / person and it was great value.

You can get a taxi but many people prefer ordering a car service from Newark with a fixed price. I think (but am not sure) taxi prices can fluctuate. The 2 cos. that are reasonably priced are Carmel and Tel Aviv (camellimo.com and telavivlimo.com) Their prices are posted on their websites. Tolls from Newark are about $8 and tips are generally 15-20% of the car price (not including the toll). If you%26#39;re more than 4 people, use Crown limo (1800mycrown.com) who%26#39;ll send a stretch limo for 6 people that should cost about $75-85.

There are shuttle buses that go to Port Authority bus terminal which is 42 st %26amp; 8th ave. If you%26#39;re staying at the Westin or the Hilton Times Square it%26#39;s almost across the street. These are $15/person.

From the airport, you can also take the ';Airtrain.'; It is a monorail that links up with NJ Transit/Amtrack, which will take you into NY Penn Station. From there, 1 stop up on the subway is the ';Times Square'; area. Total cost should be no more than $15.00/person. The train ride is 15 minutes and the subway, depending upon the wait, is 5-10 minutes.

A taxi from Newark will have a fixed price which the controller will tell you before you get in, You tell him where you are going and he gives you a ';receipt'; thingy. You actually pay the driver when you get there with the toll charges and tip, but it means the driver cant rip you off. It cost us $60 in total to travel from Newark to the Belvedere which is just off Times Square.

Great thanks for all your advice.

    Did you visit recently Angelica?

Last October, hoping to get back next March/April - busy saving. Absolutely loved NY.

we got back yesterday and on previous advice on trip advisor used tel aviv - they were excellent.

The price is pretty much the same as a cab ( we paid $49 + tip + $8 toll for a luxury sedan) and are more luxurious.

You reserve in advance and can pay then on credit card or in cash on the day.

Once you have your bags, simply ring tel aviv and they send a car within 7 mins they said - ours arrived in 5 !!!

I think I had also read on a previous thread that New York cabs dont operate at Newark because Newark is in New Jersey - dont know if they makes a difference - a New York expert might be able to help.

ps...if you have to get a taxi, get a water taxi from the downtown piers or brooklyn - only $5 and you get a great view of Manhatten

this is how it was (for me)

This site has been pretty helpful so i thought i would share a little.

I went to nyc with three kids of varying ages stayed in the embassy suites did lots of touristy type stuff.

Transfer from JFK was good we got shoe-horned in a normal yellow cab even thouhg were five of us (one was 2 1/2) the despatcher argued with the cab driver on our behalf because we didnt have much luggage by american standards.

Hotel was pretty good i liked the location. We arrived at the weekend and it was very very busy at breakfast and in the managers cocktail hour.

it was pretty close to the subway (ten minutes)

We did a greyline bus tour that ws valid for a 48 hour period which was good not least of which was the fact that we could rest our feet.

Unfortunately some of the guides seem to have decided that having character is the way tio gratuities. character is great for ten or twenty minutes but after an jour or so it grates.

I went with the older kids to an afternoon yankees game and i was surprised how much they enjoyed the spectacle.

We was the bus to get to the museums by central park and the get around to start with.

My kids liked different bits of the moma.

we ate out a lot but in general was disapointed by the standard.

My son insisted on going to Mars 2112. I would not go there again under any circumstances. But holidays are always a compromise.

went to the theatre with pre booked tickets it was pretty good (Spamalot)

I would not wait in the queue at the TKTS in times square. There is one near the fish market but remember that on monday most of the theatres are dark.

In general the most fun was walking about the least was the crowds and some (very few) incredibly rude people.

We all liked walking about and seeing the sites

All in all very enjoyable, My wife and i would like to go without the kids(we can dream) or hope to live long enough to ewave them off.

this is how it was (for me)

Mars had some of the worst food I ever ate in NY. I seriously think McDonald%26#39;s is ten times better. But I guess kids like the spaceship thingies.

this is how it was (for me)

Mars 2112 is definitely kidstuff. For some kids, it is the high point of a NYC experience. I don%26#39;t think I%26#39;ve ever heard the same from an adult.

So, did you like it? Your post was full of mixed messages.

it was great to have the kids with us for a week and to see them enjoy the bits they liked many of which were a surprise to me and i really enjoyed parts of it others not so much. Isnt that like life or are we all supposed to be wildly enthusiastic or terminally depressed.

Hopefully you will get to visit again without the kids. I am sure that your experience will be different.

By the way, I live here and hate the crowds myself at times, and have been to Mars2112, great for the kids, not so much for the adults, but I am glad that I went anyway.

    info on aerlingus

    Hi all,

I am flying out of Dublin on the 30th Nov @ 4 p.m. As i am a diabetic and have to eat at regular intervals i was wondering if anyone has any experience on this air line? Do they serve meals on their transalantic flights. I flew with aerlingus in business class a couple of years ago and recieved great service but I am afraid I will be in the cheap seats this time. I have also read on the forums that flying with them is equivelant to flying to spain on a charter and as the service is basic thought I better check.

    Thanks for any help

    info on aerlingus

yes aerlingus do provide meals on transatlantic flights. they comprise of starter, choice or main course, dessert and soft drinks. beer, wine etc are at an extra cost.

Also if you require a special meal( eg vegetarian, diabetic, gluten free etc) contact them now to get your order in as soon as possible.

I%26#39;m flying with them in december from glasgow via dublin to jfk and i got such a good deal on flights with them that im not really bothered if the service isn%26#39;t perfect. as long as i get to nyc thats all that matters.

Anyway, hope this helps and for more information regarding transatlantic services on aerlingus go to www.aerlingus.com. thats where i got this info. you have to hunt around a bit on the website to find it all but its there! Have a great time.

    info on aerlingus

Definately agree about ordering special meals. I always do when they serve a meal (have done this on various airlines but not Aerlingus) and you can get the type of food you need, and you get served first, which would probably help you.

Give them a call and let them know and they will accomodate your needs, for sure!

Truedub, I have never flown with any of the big american airlines so I guess I have nothing to compare Aer Lingus with but I have always found them fine. You will get an in flight meal however when we flew to NY with them last year there was awful turrbulence and they were unable to serve tea and a scone near the end of the flight so with your medical condition you may need to bring some extra food with you just in case.

Hi true dub, I flew Aerlingus to Boston and the guy in front of me had identified himself as a diabetic. They really looked after him during the flight. They stored his insulin inthe fridge in the galley and checked him constantly to see if he needed anything. The food was fine, typical airline stuff ,but edible. But I do remember the kindness shown to this man. Maybe if you do the same and let them about your condition , they will do the same for you. This was in 03 , hopefully the situation is still the same!

If you need to bring syringes with you onto an Aer Lingus flight, it%26#39;s a good idea to get a letter from your doctor explaining that you are a diabetic. To the best of my knowledge, they keep the syringes and medication for you and give them to you when required. Not sure what the position is if you simply use medication to control your diabetes.

A must-read Christmas post from a former poster

    New York at Christmas, finally.

The words filled my mind as I disembarked from the plane. I was making a pilgrimage of sorts, an odd voyage of discovery, for although I was no stranger to New York, I had never seen it during the holidays.

How many times had I been told what a dazzling spectacle it was? I had heard that Christmas was celebrated here like nowhere else, that here there was magic: the trees along Park Avenue, lit and twinkling in the night; the fantastic window displays in the stores on Fifth Avenue; the monumental tree at Rockefeller Center; the candlelight tours through the neighborhoods; the roasted chestnuts and the exuberance of the people; the sheer gorgeousness of everything. A friend, a fellow Torontonian, who had lived in New York for several years, still spoke as familiarly of Christmas there as if he had never left.

    ';At Christmas, there is a vibration in the air,'; he said. ';If you look at New York as staggering random energy, then the note that the tuning fork strikes at Christmas is purer. There is a silent bond of communication between everyone.';

Such comments excited my imagination. I knew after all that New York has more of everything: more fine restaurants, more theater, more music, more money, more imposing architecture. But could this fabled city of everything grand really be more so at Christmas? Could things be gayer and quicker and jauntier and more thrilling? Could the citizens of this most crowded island find room in their hearts for each other, and the millions of visitors? Could the luminous streets send such light-borne sparks, en masse, the people would be touched, their spirits lifted and glowing?

Now it was time to find out.

I took a cab into Manhattan. Something special was in the air. I could see it in the way people walked, buoyantly, almost as if they were dancing. Whatever they carried--gifts, surely, and lightheartedness--the material apparently had no weight. We seemed to walk as one, characterized by the state we constantly seek in everyday life but which is so elusive: lost in the present, thrilled to be where we are, carried along by the night and the promise of something special coming. And in that crush, what vitality, what hope, a glimpse of possibility, a sense of what we might become.

A festive feeling possessed me as a world of sweet and unexpected pleasures opened on all sides. I hadn%26#39;t known about the brilliant yet ethereal snowflake suspended where Fifth Avenue meets 57th Street. It seemed so deliciously silly, like a child%26#39;s explosion of art. It spoke of a burst of joy, of the workings of the imagination. I was cheered by the splendor of what I was seeing, stirred by the intensity that made the streets crackle. Such was the power I felt as I walked along.

';Oh, to be young and in New York and to have eyes that light up all things with the sweetest and most golden glow,'; wrote Tom Wolfe. I was not that young, but the light was there, it was there.

I recalled what a policeman had told me in Central Park, that at Christmas the city grows friendlier, the people more like residents of a small community than of the flashiest, most cosmopolitan city in the world. Friends, family, love and closeness were all around me. This was the sensation that New York was awakening within me. I loved it. I loved everything about it, the enthusiasm, the way we all walked with such vigor, the spring in our steps. New York was a trampoline. I bounced. It was as if I was being swept along by a wave. I wanted to be carried along, where the streets are as brilliant as the sky, where I feel fresh and new and childlike. And the churches. When a church door opens for a few moments, releasing a glow of light and a drift of voices joined in song, I am swept away by a rush of generous feelings.

The music, too, is everywhere. Brass ensembles play on street corners. A resonant carol rings from the pan of a steel drum. Up at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, cloisters are in full voice. I hear them, I hear them. My step slows; I pause, warmed and graced.

And yet, and yet...The city sparkles and joy is in the air. But I am alone here. I feel a pang for a moment. Just as quickly, however, I realize that I do feel part of something because we in the streets are sharing the spirit. I feel the ecstatic presence of children. We are all children in New York at Christmas. We feel a sense of wonder. We are open-minded and both laughter and tears come freely. We are curious. We become more ourselves in the city that in transforming itself transforms us. Do the lights on and above this most sophisticated city not remind us %26#39;Tis the season to be light, to light up inside, to polish our best selves and shine? And I think this is the way most New Yorkers and most visitors feel at Christmas. They are ready to make miracles, they await miracles.

On my first night in New York I heard a voice call my name. Was I hearing right? Nobody knew I was in the city. Turning around I saw a friend from Vancouver. I was astonished to meet him on this night in this place. Yet--if we were to meet accidentally anywhere, surely it would be during the Christmas season, when New York attracts us , centripetal force that it is. Families plan months in advance to come into the city to walk up Fifth Avenue and marvel. New York at Christmas is an event, when mankind formalizes its need to rejoice.

That chance encounter was, for me, its essence: a dream, a bright surprise, the sheer energy of positive emotions and tender feelings made real. The city is never lovelier.

I plan to return to New York again for Christmas. I will walk with a woman who knows the city streets well, and who, after a lifetime of New York Christmases, still looks forward to each new one as if it will be her first. We will visit the stunning window displays in the department stores. We will skate at Rockefeller Center and stand beneath the Brooklyn Bridge, there to be dazzled by the panorama of the Manhattan skyline. I will again wander through F.A.O. Schwarz--to further encourage the child in me--and walk on a clear, cold night through Central Park snacking on roasted chestnuts.

I want to do it all in New York at Christmas this year, because New York is the Christmas place. I feel at home here. I will feel at home again this Christmas. How could I not, in a city and during a time when the human spirit soars so high?

that has got me even more excited!! this time in 3 mths we will be there...cant wait!

Wow - should be required reading for everyone, evrywhere.

It, the fact that the holidays are coming, dawns on me as soon as I see Jerry Lewis sing ';When You Walk Alone';.

Oh My God! This is a lifelong dream of mine to go to NYC over Christmas. I will finally do so this December 10th with my future husband (we%26#39;re getting married on the 9th) who has NEVER been.

Thanks for sharing. I%26#39;m definitely in ';A New York State of Mind';!

We fly in to NYC in 99 days, Yes thats rightm Christmas day!!!!!!!! We get married on Dec. 24th.

Have the hotel and 5 shows booked and paid for. We cant wait!

Wow Wingman...what a way with words!!! Eloquent.

I too am booked for Xmas Day through New Years day, however, just found out this week my 80 year old mom has been diagnosed with liver and lung cancer. Don%26#39;t know what the next few months will bring. We%26#39;ll see if our trip is meant to be.

    Thanks again Wingman!

Just don;t forget two more things

Christmas decorations market at Columbus Circle

    Sacks decorations

Observation deck at the Rockefeller Center

    Carols at GReenwich Village

    FAO is back !!

    taxiplease:

Sorry about your mom, hope she will be ok.

WOW!! So beautifully written, it brought the hairs up on the back of my neck. This posting to me epitomises the spirit and adventure and glow of Christmas.....I am visiting 26th November for 5 nights, so I am hoping to feel some of that Christmas atmosphere that Wingman talks about....

But whoever you are wherever you are at Christmas this year, bless you all, and may all your hopes and dreams come true.

Taxiplease....as you say, if it is meant to be - you will be there! Take care of your Mom and go with your heart - it will always be true! I hope things go well for her.

    Nypd Museum

Anybody visited? I%26#39;m planning on taking it in during the downtown part of my itinerary, along with South St Museum, Battery Park and walk across Brooklyn Bridge. From the website it seems quite small ( not that there%26#39;s anything wrong with that!). Am I right to assume that I don%26#39;t need to plan for more than an hour there?

    Nypd Museum

I was there about two years ago. Worth a trip. Yes, an hour%26#39;s about right. Though you might want to see if you can time it to use the FATS simulator (for free) while you%26#39;re there. It%26#39;s just like the firearms simulator that cops use during training. A video plays and you stand there with an electronic gun and have to determine whether the situation requires you to fire at a suspect. An actual NYPD trainer. Very educational. Oops, sorry ... just checked the website (http://www.nycpolicemuseum.org/) and I%26#39;m not sure the FATS is still there. Museum%26#39;s still worth a visit though.

    About 3-4 in the afternoon.

    Empire State Building

Are you only allowed on the Observation deck for an allocated amount of time??

Diva..you can stay up there till they close if you wish.

    Hi Kerry,

Think you can stay up there as long as you want.

    Hope you are OK

    Cathy

Thanks Daisiegee, Cathy. We were looking to go up about 7 which I guess would be one of the busiest times! Be nice to see sundown and the city changing from day-light to dark.

I%26#39;m well thx Cathy how%26#39;s you? Only 10 days to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Kerry, (Sorry Trudy to hijack your post) ;o)

I%26#39;m fine thanks, i have been sorting a few things for hols today - and looking at itinery. I am so excited - I keep counting the days - only got 8 more days to work now - got the Friday off - having my hair done! At least it will start the holiday straight

Didn%26#39;t know when you were planning on going up the ESB but thought this website might help you - it%26#39;s one of Daisygees http://www.sunrisesunset.com/ it was on this forum a little while back - it tells you when the sunrises and sets (it sets 6.39pm on 1/10, 6.32pm on the Big Day)

We can%26#39;t decide when to go up - were planning on going up on first night but not sure now as think I might of found out there is a night loop bus tour that we can do. Graham has now decided he would like to go up morning and night. Definately going to book tickets on line before we go - that will save one lot of queues.

    How%26#39;s the dress?

    Take Care

    Cathy

Kerry, Be careful about your timing on ESB. When you will be here the sun will be setting at about 6:30 PM and you want to be at the top a bit before then. Ken

Our wait was about 1 1/2hours...the hallway was very HOT... (in March) NO chairs, then one elevator wasn%26#39;t working for the top floors so the wait was even longer unless you wanted to walk 4or 5 flights. We had hoped to see sunset, was was dark by the time we finally got up. Just my experience.

it opens at 8am now - we went in June at approx 830am and were straight to the top with no Q%26#39;s at all. After around an hour up top in was getting kinda busy and hard to move around so we left.(we had our 2 yr old in a stroller) Purchase your tickets on line as well and you won%26#39;t have to Q to buy them on the day.

    www.esbny.com

    enjoy!

You can shorten your waiting time if you%26#39;re willing to pay $30. When we went, there were young people wearing yellow T-shirts that were offering a skyride/observatory package for $30. If you decide to do this, they take you to a door on 33rd St. where you buy the tickets. We skipped the skyride, and it only took 25-30 minutes to get to the top (the wait outside was posted at 1.5 hrs.) I didn%26#39;t buy tickets online in advance because I wasn%26#39;t sure we would have time to go, so we didn%26#39;t mind paying the extra money to save time.

cheap tickets to see 'the producers'

other than going to the tkts booths, is there any other way of getting cheap tickets to see a wednesday matinee of this show?

when we were in new york in sept 2001, i checked on the net (of course i cannot remember how or which site) and went to the theatre about an hour before the show and paid $20/ticket for balcony seats for a wednesday matinee of les miserables. what a deal! perhaps i got this because it was not a new show?

would it be possible to do this for %26#39;the producers%26#39;?

any hints or advice would be appreciated.

    thanks.

cheap tickets to see 'the producers'

There are currently several discount codes on

    broadwaybox.com/shows/the_producers_nyc_tick鈥?/a>

but they all expire on Nov. 6. If your trip is later than that, it%26#39;s possible there%26#39;ll be new codes closer to the date but if it%26#39;s around the holidays, you may not have luck.

If you%26#39;re a student, you can try for rush tickets on the day of the show.

';$25 student rush tickets are available at the box office only on the day of the performance, when the b.o. opens, subject to availability. Seats may have an obstructed view. Limit two per valid student ID.

NYC attractions?? with so little time wheres best to go??

Me and my girlfriend will be in NYC in february next year. We will be there for 4 days. We want to see as much as we can, but we realise we cannot do everything in that time. Any tips would be appreciated on what attractions stood out and what didnt. plus are there any new york italian style restaurants that are a must???

NYC attractions?? with so little time wheres best to go??

In 4 days on Manhattan you both can see quite a bit. I would suggest the Penn Station area as central point. From there within walking distance are numerous attractions not to mention Times Square. Little Italy is also a short subway ride for some great Italian food and atmosphere.

Buy the MTA pass for unlimited subway and bus in the region. Pick out some real comfy walking shoes as this is the best way to see New York you will be amazed at every turn.

I would recommend a sunset cruise on the Hudson River.

Is Niagara Falls OK for the disabled?

I am disabled and must walk with a cane. I also tend to get tired rather quickly so I was wondering if it%26#39;d be worth the time for me and my wife to make the 10 hour drive to see the Falls. We%26#39;ve both always dreamed of going but I%26#39;m concerned there would be a lot we couldn%26#39;t do together. What else is there to do in the area and what would be the reccommended amount of time to stay? 2 days? 3 days? more?

We are hoping to visit sometime next summer.

Is Niagara Falls OK for the disabled?

    Hi there,

Definately make the trip. I am a tour guide with overthefallstours.com. and we work out of the econolodge at the falls, on Niagara Falls Blvd.

The best way to see the falls is with a guided tour. We take you to all of the attractions and little hideouts that you would never see on your own. If tours are not your thing then heres what I suggest you do on your own, all accessible:

The only thing I would suggest is to do the Maid of the Mist trip from the United states side as there is less walking. It is offered from both the Canadian side and the American side. Made sure it is operating when you come as the start time for this attraction is always different depending on the ice from the Niagara river. Usually runs April-late Oct.

You can drive to many attractions on the canadian side, the majority are free parking. My favourite is the whitewater walk.

You take an elevator down into the gorge and walk on a wooden walkway as far as you feel you can alongside a class 6 rapid. It is beautiful. Just down the road is the areocar ride which takes you across the whirlpool in a cable car, no walking

involved. 10.00 canadian for 10 min

The butterfly conservatory is small with 2000 butterflies flying around and that is located within the botanical gardens. This is all on the same river rd on the canadian side. Continue down this road to Niagara on the lake to complete your day.

Morning walks around goat island on the us side is beautiful. You are guareented to see a rainbow overlooking the Canadian horseshoe falls whenever it is sunny.

You need 2 days here at least.

    Hope this helps

Is Niagara Falls OK for the disabled?

    tafkate

YBB is exactly right: definitely make the trip! The falls are spectacular; Maid of the Mist is unforgetable. Information on that is at the web site maidofthemist.com

You%26#39;ll need 2 days minimum. You mention you%26#39;d like to visit summer 2006. I%26#39;d recommend only mid-week, because of crowds. Alternatively, consider May or Sep/Oct, but avoid the last two (holiday) weekends in May. Hotel prices are also likely to be better non-peak.

Do make the trip, but be aware that it is very difficult to walk up clifton hill, even when there are few tourists. That is on the Canadian side. On the American side, I took my disabled aunt, we parked in the lot at a handicapped slot, and from there we took the trolly everywhere-she was fine, although she did not attempt the stairs at the cave of the winds. What would be ideal would be renting a motorized cart. Then you could see the attractions at your own pace. I would contact the parks department on the US side and find out if they provide any thing like that at the park itself.

    Other Restaurants

My family and I will be visiting soon and we have visited before (family there) and want to know some good restaurants. I looked under the Restaurant list on this site, and was disappointed that so few restaurants listed (even the top 10) had only 1 OR NO user reviews - just mainly where the restaurant is listed in a restaurant book, and reviewed from that aspect.

We love Mings on Monroe, Aladdins on Monroe, House of Poon, but would like some more great food dinner restaurant suggestions, please, from you readers. Please help me to plan family dinners besides the ones I have listed.

Where is the best fish fry? And is it just on Saturday night? Where is the best Italian restaurant ? All need to be medium price range and not too dressy. Thanks for your help!

    Other Restaurants

Fish fry is typically on Friday night. I%26#39;m not a big fish fry lover but Jeremiah%26#39;s on Monroe is popular. Pittsford Seafood Market on Monroe (what is it with Monroe anyway?) has a restaurant next door and their fish is always great so you might try that. There are so many Italian places, you could start an argument over the best one. http://www.therefrigerator.net/ has a comprehensive list with reviews. Personally I like Agatina%26#39;s on Buffalo Rd., and La Trattoria D%26#39;Abruzzo on E. Ridge Rd., but there are plenty more good ones.

    Other Restaurants

Asking for the best fish fry or Italian food in Rochester is a tough call.

Almost every bar, diner, burger joint, and even fancy restaurants claim to have the ';Best Fish Fry in Town';. Most are great - I really don%26#39;t think you will go wrong getting a fish fry anywhere in town. I actually really like the one at Bill Gray%26#39;s - a famous local burger chain with several locations in the area.

As for Italian restaurants, we have one on almost every corner! I really like Prioetti%26#39;s in Webster, Nicks Seabreeze in Irondequiet, Michellina%26#39;s in Henrietta, and Boccacinni%26#39;s in Fairport.

Other great restaurants in town are Oasis on Monroe, Mex on Alexander, The Glengarry Grille in Fairport, and Scotch n Sirloin in Henrietta.

Chamber Magic @ The Waldorf Astoria

Had the opportunity to see the show this evening and it was extremely entertaining, as recommended by Voyageruse in the past. If you get the opportunity, worth the time %26amp; the money.

    www.chambermagic.com

There is a $10.00 discount offered from www.playbill.com (free to join) by the way, off the $55.00 price.

I have no affiliation nor vested interest in recommending this show. (LOL).

Chamber Magic @ The Waldorf Astoria

I 2nd the recommendation. We attended Chamber Magic over the winter and loved it!

Chamber Magic @ The Waldorf Astoria

Glad you enjoyed it NYCGirl. At half the price of a Broadway show, I think it is a lot of fun and worth it. That brick trick.... man I still laugh thinking about that one...

Yes, me too. There were some kids there and they were stunned at that one. Besides, he is quite charming and personable, just an enjoyable evening.

  • Getting to the Statue of Liberty

    Hi there

My wife will have about 4hrs usable time in Newark Airport in October. Can anyone tell us can we go to at least see the SoL and back within this time and what is the quickest way to travel

    Thanks

Getting to the Statue of Liberty

That%26#39;s not all that much time but if you really want to see the statue, I%26#39;d suggest you take a cab ride to Jersey City State Park which is very close to the statue, right off the Holland Tunnel extension of the Jersey Turnpike. However, it%26#39;s mostly looking at the back of the statue. You can see Ellis Island very well too. It%26#39;s only about a 15-20 minute cab ride and would be fairly cheap. Maybe $20. That%26#39;s your best bet. Going all the way to Battery Park in Manhatan and going to the island is pretty much impossible with that amount of time. It%26#39;s an all day thing with the lines.

Getting to the Statue of Liberty

I really don鈥檛 think you have time for this. Even if you managed to get a taxi from the Airport to the Ferry Launch in NJ and you already had your tickets and everything timed out perfectly (very unlikely) what would you do with your bags? I don鈥檛 think they have lockers at Newark and I鈥檓 pretty sure you can鈥檛 even bring a backpack to the SOL.

    Rangers game

I%26#39;ve got my tickets for the Rangers- Panthers game on 17 Oct. Please can you let me know what time I should get to MSG for a game that starts at 7pm. I need to pick up my tickets from WillCall. Is 7pm the start of the main game or is there any pre-game entertainment that is worth going for?

    Rangers game

They usualy drop the puck about 7:15. The pre-game ceremonies for a regular season game are not too special. It takes about 10 minutes or so to get into the building and into your seats. So, just plan on getting to the Garden about 7 and you%26#39;ll be fine.
