In today%26#39;s New York Times is an article (link below) that explains why the outcropping rocks look the way they do in Central Park. It has to do with a glacier 18,000 years ago. What they don%26#39;t say is that the same bedrock allows for the foundation of the very tall buildings in Manhattan. There are no tall buildings in Greenwich Village because it used to be a swamp and the bedrock is too far down in the ground.

When you visit Central Park
Thanks for this post nyc10025. My children love to play on the rocks in Central Park and always ask why they are in Central Park but they don%26#39;t seem to be in other parks we visit around the city. When we visit next week, I will finally provide them with an answer! Thanks again. MOM
When you visit Central Park
nyc10025,
As usual, you are full of great info. Thanks, Jackie
Thanks for the link, Ken. By the way, is that you and the missus on top of the WTC?
Fantastic post!
I love little bits of info like that! Good work!
Now I am even more impressed with our Big Apple Greeter, because I asked her that question about the rocks, and she knew that answer. She even knew the name of the kind of rocks that they were, and that Manhattan was able to have tall buildings because of it. Way to go, Mary!
Nic, No it%26#39;s not the WTC but looks like it could be. Actually it was taken on the top pf a mountain near Palm Springs, California. To see how this photo fits into a trip that we took, see the link below:

Now that I see Palm Springs in the background, I realise my mistake! Thanks for that link, Ken. It sounds like you had a great vacation!
I think I%26#39;ll have to have a proper look at the Virtual Tourist when time allows.
I remember being told about the ';Schist'; on our first visit when our son was then 12. He took great delight in climbing in Central Park and saying ';I%26#39;m on a pile of schist';. He thought he was being so rude and daring!
Nice one, Daisiegee!
I thought I%26#39;d better respond quickly as, with language like that, your post is bound to get deleted!
Nic. LOL ..I just push it to the limits don%26#39;t I ? ;)
