Passports for Canada?

Hi - we%26#39;re traveling to Niagara in November. Will we need passports to cross to the Canadian side? Thanks for your help!

Passports for Canada?

We are going Tues .... Birth Certificate and Drivers License is what they say to bring.

Passports for Canada?

No passports yet, the latest ';talk'; we%26#39;ve heard around here is if the law goes into effect it wont be until 2008. D/L%26#39;s are best for those who possess one, Birth Cert. for minors.

they had a plan to require passports effective 2007 but that was scrapped for good soon after the plan arrose. a photo id and a birth certificate if available) will suffice.

DannyV, curious as to the exact percentage of US citizens with passports. If Canada introduced a passport requirement, would there be many people ';outside the loop'; without passports who would have to get them ?

echolaine- I live in Seattle, WA. We go to BC frequently. The answer is this-You ABSOLUTELY have to have a driver%26#39;s license and it is a tremendous help to have a birth certificate or a certified birth certificate (even if you are presenting a driver%26#39;s license). The previous poster is correct. Passports are not required until January 2008. I crossed the border last summer and a Canadian Border Patrol told me she didn%26#39;t ';technically have to let me in Canada with only a driver%26#39;s license.'; The big deal to Canada is ';Will the US let you back in?'; They don%26#39;t want to be stuck with us and the requirements for re-entry are getting tougher-as they should be. Take your birth certificate, too. You%26#39;d hate to never be able to return home!

Insightful-It isn%26#39;t the Canadians introducing the passport requirement. It is the US. I%26#39;m sure people who live close to the border or travel frequently already have passports. But you are right, I think it is a small percentage of citizens that actually carry one. But, they are being phased in and to cross the northern border we have until Jan. 2008.

|Thanks for the clarification Lynn.

Hi,

I cross the border everyday as a tour guide of Niagara Falls.

Customs likes you to have a birth certificate but if you dont have one you will be ok with birth cert and drivers licence
