Hi Everyone, Can%26#39;t stop reading your info, absolutley brilliant. My partner and myself are coming to your city for the first time on Thursday for 3 days(I know-not long enough) and will be leaving on the %26#39;red eye%26#39; Sunday 9th 6pm....

We want to do so much!! Not bothered about the museums (save that for the next trip). Staying at the Renaissance Times Sq. We are so excited. Tried for a Big Apple Greeter but only booked trip 2 weeks ago and was told too late!..

Any suggestions of an itinary to see as much as poss. Thankyou in anticipation..

Visiting for 3 days 6th Jan

Helene, I think the good news is it will be much less crowded this coming week than it has been, but if you want to see a lot, planning ahead is a good idea. You might consider doing a bus tour (even if only the downtown loop of Grayline) to get to see highlights. If you want to do the Empire State, buy tickets ahead online (unless you do a Grayline pkg that includes entry). Take a Staten Island Ferry ride (free) to see the Statue of Liberty or use nywatertaxi.com as a hop on /off tour. Hope this helps.

Thanks NYWhiz, will take onboard your advice as always (feel like I know you) having read so much of your replies, which by the way, are so helpful.

Hope you had a Great Nwe Years by the way. I was on this site most of the night!

Have heard that there is an outlet village somewhere downtown? is that worth a trip or shall we just stay with Macy%26#39;s and Sacks? Maybe that will be enough hey!

Took your advice on the hotel as we were booked in at the Plaza until we read about the shabby rooms etc. Thanks so much.

Helene

What you do really depends upon what sort of stuff you enjoy. The Rockefeller Centre Christmas tree might still be up so I%26#39;d say that%26#39;s worth a visit to see that along with the ice skaters. From there it%26#39;s only a block to St. Patrick%26#39;s Cathedral. Then I%26#39;d take a stroll up 5th Avenue to look at the shops and browse.

If you%26#39;re a bit adventurous, hop on the subway and head downtown. You can easily spend a pleasant afternoon exploring Little Italy, Chinatown, Soho, Canal Street for shopping (less expensive brand name knockoffs from street vendors) and Greenwich Village. They%26#39;re all sort of near each other.

I%26#39;d check out the half-price TKTS booth in Times Square and see what Broadway shows are available. Which ever one you pick--you%26#39;ll enjoy it. And even tho%26#39; you don%26#39;t want museums, if the weather isn%26#39;t too bad, take the boat ride to the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island tour. Ellis Island is a museum but most people find it fascinating and a highlight of a New York visit.

Finally, just out of curiosity, why are people from Liverpool called ';Scousers';? Exactly what is a ';scouser';? Funny, just as a few Brits come here and take a tour of Yankee Stadium, one of my dreams has always been to visit Anfield and actually walk on the pitch. Is that allowed and do they have tours?

Enjoy your visit.

Well Ruffian42,

Thanks for the info, sounds really good and will probably do alot of what you have said.

MMmm, very disappointed as regards to %26#39;anfield%26#39; as we are Evertonians and support Everton Football Club which is the blue half of Merseyside!!

%26#39;Scousers%26#39; gets the name from years gone by when money was very short and the woman would make a pan of %26#39;Scouse%26#39; which consisted of potatoes, carrots, onions any vegetables that were around and then the bone of meat would be used as a stock and the rough cuts and left over meat, all cooked in a pot with seasoning and servered with crusty bread when the men came home after a hard day at work down at the docks. Hense the local cuisine...Scouse!! Lovely with red cabbage or beetroot... Went on a bit there..Sorry.

You can have a tour of both of the football grounds at a very minimal fee. (锟斤拷14) Get to see the trophy rooms, changing rooms, around the pitch (not sure if they%26#39;ll let you walk on it) and the Directors boxes.. Takes about 1/2-1 hour. Can also include a meal and meet the players but this is much more but still within budget.

Did actually work in one of the bars at Anfield for a few months. Most of the staff were Evertonians!! Probably like that at Goodison. They are only within 1/2 a mile of each other.

Want to take in ESB too- are we best to book tickets on-line before we leave UK? and whats the best time to go?

Thanks

At long last, I finally found the derivation of scouser. Thanks.

Now if I can ever find out why Portsmouth are known as Pompey and how West Brom became ';the Baggies'; I%26#39;ll have it all. And thanks for the info about Anfield, tho I thought it quite funny that Evertonians were staffing Anfield. Perhaps there are a few Reds working at Goodison.

As far as the ESB is concerned, you can purchase tickets in advance but now that so many of the Christmas tourists are heading back to the UK (seems we%26#39;re not getting anybody else this year--alright with me) you shouldn%26#39;t encounter many lines.

Best time to go in terms of shortest wait is probably in the morning just around 10. However, if you go at 4:30-5 pm, you%26#39;ll get a chance to see the sun set and all the lights of NYC at night.

Just finished watching Moyes%26#39; boys get thrashed by Spurs, 5-2. Sorry %26#39;bout that. Have a great holiday in NY. We welcome Blues as well as Reds, but we do tend to draw the line with Arsenal supporters.

Cheers.

I%26#39;ve been told that the ';Baggies'; comes from the shorts they wore...from a Black Cat married to a Maggie!

There%26#39;s no reason I can think of not to buy ESB tickets online ahead. Regardless of lines, it still saves you waiting on one. The only reason not to do it is if you think you%26#39;ll buy one of the passes that includes entry to ESB. Otherwise, buy it ahead and use it whenever you like.

Greetings from a fellow scouser! (live in Allerton and off to NYC in April!)

Now is the time to get your itinery done! Me and my boyfriend have spent HOURS searching for info on the net and we have come up with a brilliant intinery!

First of all, buy a unlimited METRO card, excellent value for money!

You have got to see the following:

EMPIRE STATE BUILDING (you are better off arriving at the building at around 08:30am on the day you want to go rather than pre booking it, as you dont know what the weather is going to be like. If its cloudy, raining, foggy, then youre snookered.)

STATUE OF LIBERTY - You get a ferry from Battery Park. Check out their website online.

TIMES SQUARE - pretty obvious really...

CENTRAL PARK - We have carried out our research on this one and its best to see it on foot. You can get a carriage ride no problem, but always check the driver out first to see if he at least looks a)sober b) friendly c)informative.

WALL STREET/NYSE - Seen it in the movies, then visit the set!

MACY%26#39;S/BLOOMINGDALES/FAO SHWARTZ/TIFFANYS/CENTURY 21

Shopping heaven! Im buying a Tiffanys keyring at $70 (dont call me sad, its hte only thing i can afford there and at least i will have bought something than nothing!hehe)

BROOKLYN/HUDSON BRIDGE - Famous bridges of the world really....

ROCKEFELLA CENTRE - (Excuse spellling) -

HELICOPTER TRIP - Seriously, i recommend you do this. Check out LibertyHelicopters (online) $108 each for 10-12 mins. Takes you over Manhattan Skyline. There is one cheaper, but its only 5-7 min!

FLAT IRON BUILDING - Impressive piece of architecture.

YANKEE STADIUM - Ever seen Brewsters Millions????? :O)

Lastly i recommend the New York Apple Tour bus - its around $40-45 but it takes you EVERYWHERE in Manhattan and you wont miss anything!! Its valid for 2 days and you can hop on and off. Check this info out online too....

Let us know how your trip goes!

Have a fab time!

GG

Ruffian42-where and how have you been able to watch the Blue Boys. ..It was bad wasn%26#39;t it!!! They%26#39;ll be playing the Sat we are over and Ray has been on the Everton Forum and has been told there is a bar called Nevada Smiths? by Union Sq(nearest subway), we should be able to watch it there?

Sorry not able to help with the Portsmouth thing.

This site really is great, who would believe there was someone on from nearby me! (GG), We are a stonesthrow away from %26#39;the%26#39; PENNY LANE, and the school John Lennon went to as a junior (3-6 grade for you Americans)

Thankyou everyone for replying. Getting really nervous but extremly excited, Just hope it feels like we%26#39;re there longer than 3 days.

Have you heard of %26#39;Celtics%26#39; basketball team? My son wants the green shirt, would you know where I would be able to get one please...

Bye for now

Helene x

The Celtics are the professional basketball team from Boston. There is a Modell%26#39;s sporting goods store near Grand Central terminal that may carry them. Also a chain of stores called The Sports Authority. Might be worth a phone call before making a trip to make sure they have them.
