Halloween in NY

My 10 year old son wonders is there anything exciting happening for children in NY as we will be there at that time. Any ideas how to entertain a 7 %26amp; 10 year old for Halloween?

Halloween in NY

BY all means go to the Halloween Parade - there are tons of kids there...

Monday Night, October 31, 2005 at 7 P.M.

The Halloween Parade starts on Spring Street and proceeds straight up 6th Avenue to 21st Street.

All those in costume are welcome to join hundreds of puppets, 42 bands of different types of music, dancers, artists, and thousands of other New Yorkers in costumes of their own creation in this new brand of Carnival!

The Halloween Parade is New York鈥檚 Carnival. As the New York Times said ';the Halloween Parade is the best entertainment the people of this City ever give the people of this City. It鈥檚 a time to kick back, to take a deep breath, to connect to each other before the dark days of winter return.';

Agree that the parade is fantastic. Bring a costume %26amp; enjoy the festivities!!!!

Keep on the lookout on this website, www.newyorkled.com, for Halloween events...there are many, both on Sunday October 30th %26amp; Monday October 31st. It is still a bit early for events to be listed.

I know that there are also events at Central Park for the kids

www.centralparknyc.org. Check back in a few weeks.

When you get to town, pickup a copy of Time Out New York which lists events in the city for the week.

Halloween is a big event here, there will be lots going on.

Ordinarily, I would agree, but the Halloween parade is very, very crowded, and you have to get to the route SO early to get a good viewing spot, you could end up standing for hours - for those reasons, I%26#39;m not sure it would be good for younger (shorter) children (not because it%26#39;s too scary, etc.).

If anyone can suggest good viewing spots, that would be great!

There are ADORABLE, more mellow Halloween parade and events for children in Prospect Park (haunted park tour) and Park Slope, Brooklyn. Very easy to get to by subway.

Most kiddie events wrap up around sundown (to ease parents%26#39; minds).

I believe there%26#39;s also a dog costume ';party'; in Fort Greene Park? Does that still go on?

I usually go to the end of the parade, where it is dispersing, and you can see lots of the costumes without the crowds, enough for me!

The whole atmosphere on Halloween in the city is fun, by the way.

Excellent point, NYCgirl. The whole town gets in the spirit, so to speak.

Here is a website that has pix of the parade:

I%26#39;m trying the official parade website, but it is not loading right now:

Try this one:

Thanks a million for those suggestions. That parade is a must. Any idea of the best place to stand? Looking forward to the parade already!

There is a street on the upper west side in the sixties I think, sorry I cant be more specific, that is open to the public for trick or treating, and it also has haunted houses and its a lot of fun. If you could find more info on this I would check it out.

Cork - get a spot close to 21st Street along 6th Avenue - that is where the parade ends. Here%26#39;s some photos from last year%26#39;s parade.

Those pictures are amazing. I%26#39;ll keep this treat a secret for them until the evening. Thanks for all the suggestions. My daughter dreaded the idea of missing out on Halloween here at home. Is there a Halloween shop that%26#39;s open all year in NY? Think I heard of this on the bus tour.

Cork - I think it%26#39;s Abracadabra, 19 West 21 Street, Between 5th and 6th Avenue - October Halloween Hours, Everyday, 11AM to 9 PM - here%26#39;s a list of all stores...
